The El is above

One of the greatest features is the giant tube running above the building. The main problem of the site was that the El (The Chicago Mass Transit Railway) ran right across the site, forever dividing the entire campus into two. Koolhaas decided to accept the imperfection of the site and wrapped (literally) the El with a metal tube, and placing the building directly underneath it. The result is an interesting and iconic silouette of the building.
